Random Funky Wines
I recently attended a gathering where the only instruction was to bring a bottle of funky wine. Now, understand that almost everyone that attended this gathering was a wine connoisseur, so the wines were all over the place but were definitely funky. Therefore, if you are looking for funky wines and don't know where to start, this blog post may be for you. I have done my best to try to find the current prices for these wines.
Funky Red Wines
Domaine de la Chevalerie 2011
This wine is a beautiful red wine from Loire. This wine can be found for around $30.00 a bottle.
This is a deep red wine that is full bodied with a velvety frame revealing black fruit, plum, and black truffles as well as spicy fragrances of cloves and pepper. This wine is ready for drinking now but will last for at least another decade.
1998 Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée de mon Aïeul
This is a Grenache from the Southern Rhône. Unfortunately, this bottle will cost you about $150.00 but it is totally worth the price for a classic old wine at its peak.
Want to try a classy old wine. This wine has a palate that is soft red and with a blend of spicy, black raspberries, cherry, licorice, pepper and earth and a whiff of smoke. This wine is ready to drink now and should be decanted for at least an hour before drinking.
Funky White Wines
Cameron 2016 Dundee Hills Chardonnay
This is an American Chardonnay from two eminent vineyards in the Dundee Hills, Clos Electrique and Abbey Ridge. This wine can be found for around $20.00 a bottle.
This wine has a nose of lemon curd, apricot, white peach, baking spice, almonds and browned butter and a creamy palate with flavors of lemon peel, graham cracker, and pear tart.
Chepika - Catawba Pet Nat 2016
Do you want to bring a totally original bubbly sparkling wine to a dinner party that will be completely different than the wines that your friends might bring? Try this wine from the Finger Lakes region of New York. This wine, at $28.00 a bottle, will fill your mouth with refreshing bubbles while rewarding your palette with full flavors.
Have you ever tried a wine which is a combination of Catawba & Delaware grapes. Of course you haven't, and neither have your friends.
This wine drinks bone dry, but has an richly intense structure of acidity and weight. The unique grapes impart a native grape flavor, accented with secondary sensations of dried lavender flowers, rosemary, and sage. This wine should drink well for at least five years.
Domaine d' Elise 2016 Petit Chablis
This is a Chardonnay from Burgundy, France. This wine can be found for around $30.00 a bottle.
This is a light wine which is tangy with beautiful fresh citrus notes which are beautifully supported by layers of warm rich fruit.
Suenen Oiry Blanc de Blancs
The Suenen Oiry Blanc de Blancs is a wonderful champagne for around $50.00 a bottle. These wines show off Oiry's distinctive, chalky terroir.
This wine is remarkably stony with pungent mineral flavors. Be prepared for a brisk, briny, and fresh on the nose with aromas of Meyer lemon, quinine, and chalk dominating. The palate is dry with racy acidity and an energetic driving finish.
